It's our local show next weekend but I don't know if I'll be able to attend this year. I've never shown anything myself but I always try to go and support, though I'm sure the exhibits will be down this year owing to the weather.Johttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17436932004631816039noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7980536948969347626.post-78513364674990340592012-08-25T13:47:09.259+01:002012-08-25T13:47:09.259+01:00An interesting post, and good to see that you had ...An interesting post, and good to see that you had such a good showing in view of what the year has like.
It's my horticultural show next week where I'll be stewarding as usual. I don't usually show as I'm always in two minds about most of the vegetable exhibits, especially the biggest, heaviest or whatever. We have a few allotment holders who grow mostly for showing which I think is such a waste.
I agree with Welly's point about some local shows struggling, and sadly I don't think that the outlook is good. I'd like to see them change and instead of emulating the big ones cater to more modern views. That won't happen until the 'old-timers' are replaced by younger growers.
I totally agree about supermarket produce which often looks good but tastes bland.
Flighty xxFlightyhttp://flightplot.wordpress.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7980536948969347626.post-46494339931940039342012-08-24T21:46:01.944+01:002012-08-24T21:46:01.944+01:00You're right - biggest isn't always best -...You're right - biggest isn't always best - I loved your arrangement in a trug - obviously female, with an eye for arranging things in a decorative way. elaine https://www.blogger.com/profile/17075935631756457901noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7980536948969347626.post-60057371997325249642012-08-24T17:34:10.717+01:002012-08-24T17:34:10.717+01:00Hi Annie, Well done you and everyone on your allot...Hi Annie, Well done you and everyone on your allotment. I'm so envious of the spirit you have there. My allotment is a small one with only 22 plots and I'd say only about 12 of those are regulars. I'm the only regular female and the youngest by about 30 years. It would be lovely if there was a bit more of a mix and a desire to have some social element to the site but there isn't. I think these shows are brilliant. I'm off to my local county show next week and wrote a piece for Grow Your Own magazine a few months ago trying to encourage people to embrace their local vegetable show as they are really struggling. I agree about the gender divide. The guys at my allotment grow some veg simply for showing and it's purely about the biggest. wellywomanhttp://www.wellywoman.wordpess.comnoreply@blogger.com
