Ridiculous potatoes!

I can't believe the weather we have had, some sun at last, hopefully will ripen my tomatoes and sweetcorn. Came back from a weeks holiday to find the allotment bursting with produce, spent sunday there making the most of the good weather, weeding, harvesting and digging up my potatoes. I paid for it the day after though, was aching all over. But I've had lots of veg to eat all week.
Here's the squash, its not the biggest one! Made a delicious soup.
My maincrop potatoes were pink fir apple, which I've grown before but were never this big! I've dug up loads which will last me all winter I hope and there were some funny shapes...

  1. The aches are surely worth it when you harvest as much as that.
It's been a good year for potatoes, even funny shaped ones!
    Happy gardening, Flighty xx

  2. Love those spuds-grew some pink fir myself and they were very funny to look at but delicious to eat-especially boiled then fried!

  3. Wow I'm impressed with the produce. I tried fennel but couldn't get it beyond the seedling stage. When did you sow yours?

  4. I sowed late end of May into modules and planted out when seedling size. But I didn't do that well either only 3 seedlings survived and got to eatable size. That was why I was so proud of that harvest. Think it was due to some dry weather at that time. A couple of weeks after I planted out I saw on my neighbours plot huge plants almost ready to crop so I'm going to try earlier next year and maybe sow in situ though I've not had much success with that this year. I seem to get very gappy rows of carrots and beetroot.

  5. In all the books I've read about fennel they say don't sow until middle of June because it doesn't like changes in temperature or too much water or if it's too dry. It sounds a bit hard work but I love fennel roasted so I'm going to try sowing it earlier next year. I don't have much success with sowing in the ground either. I always get patchy results. Then I saw a beautifully sown and germinated row of seedlings at Heligan and wondered what I'm doing wrong. There's nothing like seeing another garden to feel really inferior !!!
