Some you win some you lose...

I have some great successes at my allotment this year but some things have really not gone well.
I've talked about my squashes before but I'm very proud of them, I picked them last week and they are hardening off in the sun now.

I'm not sure how long they will last.
My carrots are a bit of a disappointment!
Good job I don't like carrots!
I've been picking some of my leeks, very wide but not very long.

They have a bit of rust on them but seem ok.
My biggest disappointment this year has been the sweetcorn which is one of my favourite vegetables.
It just never got going and flowered very late. I may get one or two from it if I'm lucky and we don't get any frosts.
I've had two useful days at the allotment this weekend, its been a lovely sunny weekend. I'm almost on top of the weeds in the beds. Its definitely getting emptier.

  1. Well at least you have had some successes - and there's always next year.

  2. This is my first real year of growing fruit and veg and it has been hit and miss for me too. But I get the feeling that there'll never be a perfect year. There will always be some things that do better than others. My carrots were a disaster and so were my sweetcorn. I was so disappointed I devoted a post to my nonexistant sweetcorn!! But my raspberries, strawberries, beans and kale have all done really well. Just as well really if everything had been as bad as my carrots I'd probably be hanging up my wellies.

  3. My carrots are always a disappointment, and my sweetcorn wasn't that good thanks to a lack of sunshine through the summer.
As Elaine says there's always next year! Flighty xx

  4. Yes I've definitely learnt through the last few years of growing veg that every year is different and you may be extremely successful one year, do exactly the same thing the following year and it be a complete disaster. We are so weather dependent, but I guess that's what makes gardening so much fun. If I get it to work next year, my sweetcorn will taste the more sweet!
